Original Writing Competition for Primary School Learners 2011
This year the Junior Original Writing Competition for Primary Schools was organised by the Mid-Vaal Branch and the award ceremony was once again hosted by the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.
Three hundred and twenty eight individual pieces of writing were submitted by 17 schools. All entrants received a certificate: participation, merit award, runner-up or winner.
The floating trophy in memory of Mrs Beverly Liebenberg was awarded to the school with the most winning pieces and a trophy recording the top five schools was presented in honour of Dr Richard Haywood a founder of this particular competition.
In order to promote writing throughout primary schools, winning slots were allocated as follows: four places for Grade 4, five places for grade 5, six for Grade 6, seven for Grade 7 and eight for Grade 8. However, these did vary slightly according to the adjudicators. Each school was allowed to submit 20 entries at R10 per entry. If disadvantaged schools couldn’t afford to pay the fee, this monetary amount was waived.
On receipt of entries, a control number was allocated and these were then put forward for pre-judging. Thereafter participation pieces were reserved, while the balance went onto the final judging.
The competition was sponsored by Futurevista, Exclusive Books, The Miss Earth South Africa Foundation, Chas Everatt, Mondeor Primary and The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.
FINAL RESULTS:
- A booklet was published with the winners and runners-up work.
